The Pre-Columbus Aztecs were praying and waiting for the return of Jesus Christ to rule and reign on earth.

"...the time cometh speedily that the...Holy One of Israel must reign in dominion...(1 Nephi 22:24-26

The Jews were waiting for the coming of the Messiah and as the Christians in our day wait for the second coming and the return of Jesus Christ to bring peace to the world.
The Nephites and the Lamanites were also taught that Jesus Christ would return again at the end of this world and bring in the 1,000 years of millennial reign of Christ, with Jesus Christ ruling and reign over the entire world.  Thus the return of Jesus Christ would bring peace to the world.

Even though as recorded in the Book of Mormon, they at one time had received the Gospel of Jesus Christ they the Lamanites had rejected the pure gospel of Jesus Christ they still after a thousand years still had a knowledge of the return of the God they now called Quetzalcoatl and they waiting again for his return.

Montezuma and all of the Aztec Nation were waiting for the return of the God they called Quetzalcoatl.

The Aztecs, Mayas, Inca’s, and American Indians are all for the most part descendants of Lehi as recorded in the Book of Mormon thus they have a Hebrew background.

It was nothing unusually for a Hebrew to pray upon a housetop.

"On the morrow... Peter went up upon the housetop to pray..."   (Acts 10:9)

"And behold, now it came to pass that it was upon a tower... Nephi had bowed himself upon the tower  which was in his garden..."  (Helaman 7:10)

"And it came to pass that there were certain men passing by and saw Nephi as he was pouring out his soul unto God upon the tower..."  (Helaman 7:11)

"Yea, because I have got upon my tower that I might pour out my soul unto my God, because of the exceeding sorrow of my heart..."  (Helaman 7:14)

A Hebrew custom of praying upon housetops by the Aztecs should not be a strange custom.
The Aztecs, Mayas, Inca’s, and American Indians are all for the most part descendants of Lehi as recorded in the Book of Mormon.  Thus, they would have Hebrew customs and a Hebrew heritage.

[There was a] Mexican [Aztec] custom of morning on the terraces [or balcony] of their houses…”
“…the interpreter of the Codex Telleriano-Remensis and the interpreter of the Codex Vaticanus affirm that the Mexicans, [Aztecs], were accustomed to utter from the terraces of their houses on the festival of Huneymiccaylhuiitl… repeated…during three successive nights.”
Come quickly, since we expect you.”

As we wait for the return of Jesus Christ so also the Aztecs knew about the second coming and return of Jesus Christ to the Americas.
