Linda Schele (30 October 1942 – 18 April 1998) was an expert in the field of Maya epigraphy, and iconography.

[Epigraphy is the study of inscriptions]
[Iconography, studies of art history, identification, description, and the interpretation of the content of images]

She played an invaluable role in the decipherment of much of the Maya hieroglyphs. She produced a massive volume of drawings of stelae and inscriptions, which, following her wishes, are free for use to scholars. In 1978, she founded the annual Maya Meetings at The University of Texas at Austin.  (Linda Schele, Wikipedia)

Linda Schele was not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Her life was so focused and involved in Mesoamerica and the understanding of Maya hieroglyphic that when she died she had a 'very traditional Maya ceremony'.
