The Prophets Lehi and Nephi both saw a vision of "a tree whose fruit was desirable to make one happy."  Lehi partakes of its fruit and desires his family to do likewise.  Lehi sees a rod of iron, a straight and narrow path, and the mists of darkness that enshroud men.  Sariah, Nephi, and Sam partake of the fruit, but Laman and Lemuel refuse.   This vision took place about 600–592 B.C.

The Prophet Nephi records this vision as scripture and this scripture was passed down from generation to generation. (1 Nephi 8:2-35)

Even though the Nephites and Lamanites later around 400 A.D. rejected the Gospel of Jesus Christ and tried to destroyed all of the various sacred records and scriptures.

This vision was so important that even after over 2,500 years there still remains the scriptural story about Lehi's and Nephi's vision.
